PN, PL say they didn’t receive a single donation over €7,000 in 2019, year of MEP elections

The Labour and Nationalist parties didn’t receive a single donation that totalled over €7,000 in 2019, the year of the MEP elections, according to documents released by the Electoral Commission.

According to party financing laws, information and details of donors donating below €7,000 does not need to be made public.

The reports for 2020 and 2021 have not been published yet.

In 2019, the Nationalist Party received €638,625 through donations of €50 or less from 42,049 donors. The PL received €111,172 in such donations, and did not identify the number of donors.

The PN received €183,297 through donations not exceeding €500 from 935 donors. The Labour Party received €671,041 in such donations from 34,419 donors.

The PN received €775,298 through donations between €500 and €7,000 from 333 people. The PL received €326,510 of such donations from 138 donors.

In total, the PN received €1,597,220 from 43,317 donors that year, and the PL received €1,108,723.

The financial statements for most political parties for 2019 have also been made public by the electoral commission, however the Commission has not yet made the PL’s public.

Responding to questions asked by this newsroom about the party’s financial statements, when they will be published, whether any deficiencies were found in statements submitted by the political parties and what they are, the Electoral Commission said: “All the donations and financial reports received at the office from the political parties for the year 2019 were verified by the Commission’s appointed auditors and the discrepancies were highlighted to the relevant party. Any feedback received from the respective political party was then referred back to the auditors for further review. Reports presented by several parties included various deficiencies, which also required further details and/or amendments. As regards the reports received for years 2020 and 2021, their audit verification is still ongoing,” the Electoral Commission told this newsroom.

“Given the circumstances related to the pandemic, the Electoral Commission granted various extensions in the deadline for the submission, as the political parties could not convene their annual conference/meeting which was to approve the reports in question. In view that a number of the reports were cleared by the auditors, these audited accounts were published on the Electoral Commission’s website on Friday 13th May 2022,” the Commission added.
