404 babies born through IVF since Embryo Protection Authority was established

From the day the Embryo Protection Authority was established up till the end of 2021, 418 babies were born through assisted procreation - 404 were born through IVF and 14 through intrauterine insemination.

This information emerged from the authority’s annual report, tabled in Parliament by Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne.

904 assisted procreation procedures were approved by the

Embryo Protection Authority in 2021, the government statement read. This was a record number of such procedures approved in one year by the authority. Through these 904 procedures, 194 IVF cycles took place and 123 intrauterine insemination cycles took place, which resulted in 57 pregnancies.

The report read that from the 194 cycles that could have led to pregnancies, 51 pregnancies took place. This is a 7.91% increase over the previous year.

Around 70% of these couples became pregnant on their first IVF try, 20% on their second try, and 10% on their third or fourth try.

In the case of the intrauterine insemination procedures, 6 pregnancies ensued, two of which were the result of sperm donation.

The report also shows that since the introduction of the law allowing the cryopreservation of embryos in 2018, 364 embryos were used in subsequent IVF cycles.
