‘Police are not being proactive enough in Paceville and St Julian’s areas’ – St Julian’s Mayor

The police are not being proactive enough in the areas of Paceville and St Julian’s, St Julian’s mayor, Albert Buttigieg said, in a letter sent to Police Commissioner, Angelo Gafa’.

Buttigieg expressed his concern towards several brawls and attacks, which have recently increased in occurrence, around the popular entertainment area. The latest such brawl was caught on video, and shared widely across social media, over the weekend.

In his letter, he said that these attacks are unacceptable, worrying, and of serious concern.

“As the mayor of the locality, this is unacceptable. As a parent, it is worrying that our children are being exposed to danger in a place of entertainment. As a citizen, it is of serious concern that a group of people is not only breaking the law, but also introducing a jungle culture among us”, Buttigieg said.

A recent video made the rounds on social media, showing a brawl between a group of people and a popular nightclub’s security. Buttigieg said that during the entire fight, there had been no intervention made by the police.

He said that the intervention was only carried out by security themselves, who, by law, are only responsible for what happens at the establishment itself.

Buttigieg said that the police must be proactive in it’s work. He also mentioned the specialised Paceville police squad which had been promised by Gafa’, which should be present especially in the early hours of the morning, since issues tend to arise between 2am and 5am.

Buttigieg appealed for an urgent meeting between the St Julian’s council and the Police Commissioner, in order to further discuss security in these areas. He said that it is his responsibility to express the council’s concerns.
