Two Maltese athletes to feature in European Athletics Championships in Munich

One of the busiest international seasons for Maltese athletics reaches its end next week with the participation of two Maltese athletes at the European Athletics Championships which form part of the European Championships being held in Munich with eight other sports. Over the past month, Maltese athletes achieved respectable performances at high-profile events including the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, the Mediterranean Games and several age category international events.

In Munich, Malta will be represented by two of its CSSE gold medalists, sprinter Janet Richard and long jumper Claire Azzopardi, both fresh from their efforts at the Commonwealth Games, where they competed in their respective events, while also forming part of the 4 x 100 relay team which broke the national record in the speciality.

Richard will be competing on Monday 15th at 7.35pm, while Azzopardi will be on the field on Tuesday 16th at 9.50am.

The pair are able to travel thanks to the support of the National Development and Social Fund put forward for the assistance of the Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta.

Athletics Malta to be represented at Young Leaders Forum

In the margins of the European Championships, European Athletics will also be hosting the Young Leaders Forum. The association will be represented by Greg Scerri and Luke Scerri two young officials who are instrumental in the organisation of our local events.

This participation, financially supported by European Athletics, will provide invaluable leadership experience to these two young leaders and important networking opportunities for the benefit of the Maltese athletics community.

The 2022 European Athletics Young Leaders Forum will tackle issues related to leadership skills and knowledge, event organisation, technologies, crisis management, governance, safeguarding and sustainability.

During the second half of the forum days, the athletics participants will be joined by representatives from the other eight sports who will also be participating at the European Championships Munich 2022. This will give our young leaders a unique opportunity for cross- sport exchange of best practices and inter-disciplinary networking.
