One out of five days carers’ leave will be paid for public sector employees

Parliamentary secretary Andy Ellul and principal permanent secretary Tony Sultana announced that one out of five days of carers’ leave will be paid for public sector employees.

As of today, new rights are being introduced to achieve a better work-life balance, including 10 days of paternity leave, four months of leave for parents (two months of which will be paid), the right to flexibility at work and five days carers’ leave.

Sultana said that with this decision, the Public Service continues to invest in the public officer, maintaining competitiveness and continues to act as a model employer which incentivises other sectors to follow suit.

Elul insisted that government wants to convey the message that these rights are there to increase. He thanked the principal permanent secretary for ensuring that government goes over and above the legal minimum as regards carers’ leave.

The new rights are only a first step with government committed to build on these rights that offer a better work-life balance so that workers have a higher quality of life.
